Top SellerThe Love You Make: An Insider's Story of the Beatles
by
Peter Brown, Steven Gaines

Nearly two decades after its initial publication, this behind-the-scenes tale reappears in paperback (after all, didn't Rolling Stone say it would "sell forever"?). One of the suit men--as the Beatles dismissively, often with good reason, called the folk who saw to their business affairs--recreates the well-known saga of Beatlemania but does it dispassionately enough to make it interesting. Brown, who directed the Beatles management firm NEMS and later their disastrous financial organization Apple, seems to have survived the experience unscathed, the purges, rancor, glamour, notoriety, the dishonesty, jealousy and infighting among all those who wanted a piece of the action, or a bigger cut, which eventually came to include the musicians themselves as the group began to split apart. While seeming to be objective, he leaves little doubt about his preferences as he discusses the Beatles individually, their parents and in-laws, wives and lovers, probing the personalities to show us the underside of the pop culture with its sleazy pursuit of the big buck.

Top SellerA Hard Day's Write: The Stories Behind Every Beatles Song
by
Steve Turner

A lavishly illustrated, rollicking account of the real people and events that inspired the Beatles' lyrics.

Who was "just seventeen" and made Paul's heart go "boom"? Was there really an Eleanor Rigby? Where's Penny Lane? In A Hard Day's Write, music journalist Steve Turner shatters many well-worn myths and adds a new dimension to the Fab Four's rich legacy by investigating for the first time the ordinary people and events immortalized in the Beatles' music and now occupying a special niche in popular culture's collective imagination.

Arranged chronologically by album, the book breaks new ground by exploring how private incidents influenced the group's writing and how their music evolved. Turner reveals that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was really a drawing by Julian Lennon of his childhood friend; Bungalow Bill was an all-American tiger hunter; Doctor Robert was a New York 'speech doctor'; and much more. A longtime Beatles admirer, Turner tracked down and interviewed the real-life subjects of the songs, probed public records and newspaper archives, and spoke in depth to the people closet to the Beatles to unearth tales that have never before been made public. The result is a book that chronicles an untold story of the Beatles themselves.

Illustrated with over 200 photographs, A Hard Day's Write is a visually alluring and highly entertaining journey to the land stretching just beneath your conscious mind, mapped out with strawberry fields, fool-topped hills, and long and winding roads.

Top SellerThe Beatles As Musicians: The Quarry Men Through Rubber Soul
by
Walter Everett

Given the phenomenal fame and commercial success that the Beatles knew for the entire course of their familiar career, their music per se has received surprisingly little detailed attention. Not all of their cultural influence can be traced to long hair and flashy clothing; the Beatles had numerous fresh ideas about melody, harmony, counterpoint, rhythm, form, colors, and textures. Or consider how much new ground was broken by their lyrics alone--both the themes and imagery of the Beatles' poetry are key parts of what made (and still makes) this group so important, so popular, and so imitated. This book is a comprehensive chronological study of every aspect of the Fab Four's musical life--including full examinations of composition, performance practice, recording, and historical context--during their transcendent late period (1966-1970). Rich, authoritative interpretations are interwoven through a documentary study of many thousands of audio, print, and other sources.

The group's latest CD, 1, is one of the fastest-selling records in history; their biography, Anthology, is a bestseller; and a new generation is falling under their spell. by analyzing the Beatles' extraordinary journey, Larry Lange has discerned specific principles that illustrate how to live more profound, richer, and happier lives. These principles include harnessing the power of dreaming, learning to set and meet goals, dealing with fear of the unknown, working as a team while remaining self-sufficient, keeping dreams fresh, and remaining open to spirituality and social responsibility. The book offers these principles of success and the exuberance of the Beatles as an alternative to traditional personal growth books.

Top SellerRevolution: The Making of The Beatles' White Album (The Vinyl Frontier)
by
David Quantick

Beatles fans know more about the Beatles than the Beatles know about themselves. Thus any addition to the hundreds of Beatles books needs an angle-some inspired criticism or a little new dirt-to make it necessary. Sadly, author Quantick (The Clash; Beck) delivers no such hook in his short, dull tribute to the band's White Album, his all-time favorite record. Quantick tells the well-known stories behind each of the 30 songs on the sprawling double-player. Fans will recall that McCartney wrote "Martha, My Dear" for his Old English sheepdog and that Lennon's "Dear Prudence" was about Mia Farrow's sister Prudence, who was apparently spending too much time indoors, meditating. Quantick fails to clearly articulate why he thinks the album's so brilliant, but rather tosses out impenetrable nuggets such as: "Like all great albums, the White Album is both a snapshot of the time it was recorded and a piece of music that stands alone, outside time and fashion"; and that the White Album is the only Beatles record "that would be superb if it had been recorded by any other greatest rock and pop band of all time."

Top SellerAll We Are Saying
by
John Lennon, Yoko Ono (Introduction), David Sheff, G. Barry Golson

John Lennon could be angry, as he is in Lennon Remembers: The Full Rolling Stone Interviews from 1970, and nasty, as proven by Albert Goldman's brilliant, scathing The Lives of John Lennon.

But he could also be charming, smart, and extraordinarily witty, as he is in his last interview, published in book form as All We Are Saying. Co-interviewee Yoko Ono is charm-free but valuable, because she sparks the conversation and brings up fascinating stuff that Lennon wished she hadn't, like their mad plots to kidnap her daughter from her ex-husband. As interviewer David Sheff's tape rolls, John and Yoko's anecdotes flow effortlessly: the joys of making their 1980 comeback album, Double Fantasy; the mortifying horrors of John's "lost weekend" in L.A. with Harry Nilsson; John's interestingly twisted family life; John and Yoko and Paul's last get-together, watching Saturday Night Live the night producer Lorne Michaels offered the Beatles $,200 to reunite on the show (they almost got in a cab and did it!).

Best of all is Lennon's song-by-song account of who wrote which famous tunes and where they came from. "Strawberry Fields" contains an entire childhood memoir, and the production reflects Paul's alleged "sabotage" of Lennon's work. "Please Please Me" was based on a Roy Orbison melody and Bing Crosby's punning song title "Please (Lend an Ear to My Pleas)." The "element'ry penguins" in "I Am the Walrus" refer to idiots like Allen Ginsberg who chant "Hare Krishna" worshipfully. "Hey Jude" was Paul's song comforting John's son Julian when John left his family for Yoko, and Paul's unconscious, reluctant farewell to his writing partner ("go out and get her").

Lennon had been publicly silent and artistically dormant for five years before these interviews, and he was just bursting with the exhilaration of the rebirth of his imagination days before his death. Reading this book is like sharing a day in the life of a very happy man.

Top SellerThe Beatles
by
Hunter Davies

Hunter Davies creates a thorough, honest biography of the four famous members and their rise to stardom. Because this book was written in 1967, Davies gets an insight into the Beatles' lives before they began fighting. Davies writes an honest account of the Beatles' lives, chronicling their lives from birth, but the reader can sense that some facts have been omitted, perhaps to save the dignity of the Beatles' family members. However, Davies gives enough information for readers to fill in the blanks. The book contains loads of interesting facts, pictures, and Beatles memorabilia. All things considered, The Beatles is a great book for any Beatles enthusiast or rock music fan.

Top SellerBeatles Gear: All the Fab Four's Instruments, from Stage to Studio
by
Andy Babiuk, Mark Lewisohn, Tony Bacon (Editor)

Babiuk takes a unique approach to the Beatles' story by documenting the history of their music equipment. The Beatles are forever associated with particular instruments, and thoughts of them immediately conjure images of John's Rickenbacker, George's large, hollow-bodied Gretch, Paul's signature custom Hofner violin bass (the first left-handed bass the company ever produced), and Ringo on a Ludwig drum kit. Babiuk begins with Lennon's first guitar in 1956 and follows through to the band's final 1969 sessions at the Abbey Road studios. As he shows, their choice of instruments were outlets for their personalities and creativity, and they selected a particular make and model for its individual sound, used that sound to its fullest, and then progressed to the next. Though dubbed "the quiet one," Harrison proved the maverick, continually experimenting with guitars and instruments from other nationalities, leading to the important Eastern influence on the Beatles' music. Babiuk provides marvelous technical detail on all of the Fab Four's gear, with numerous photos of either their own instruments or identical models. A fresh perspective on the group's well-documented history will appeal to hardcore fans and interested lay readers alike.

by
Mark Shapiro

Books that capitalize on the grisly interest spawned by the death of a "star" are usually inferior. Not so this biography of Harrison, universally famed as the "quiet" Beatle. Biographer Shapiro (J.K. Rowling, Carlos Santana) creates a complex portrait that shies from melodrama.

Tell Me Why: The Beatles: Album by Album, Song by Song, the Sixties and After
by
Tim Riley

A fully updated and revised edition of the classic album-by-album, song-by-song study of the Beatles.

A unique combination of musical analysis and cultural history, Tell Me Why stands alone among Beatles books with its single-minded focus on the most important aspect of the band: its music. Riley offers a new, deeper understanding of the Beatles by closely considering each song and album they recorded in an exploration as rigorous as it is soulful. He tirelessly sifts through the Beatles discography, making clear that the legendary four were more than mere teen idols: they were brilliant innovators who mastered an extremely detailed art. Since the first publication of Tell Me Why in 1988, new primary source material has appeared--Paul McCartney's authorized biography, the Anthology CDs and videos, the complete Parlophone-sequenced albums on CD, the Live at the BBC sessions, and the global smash 1. Riley incorporates all the new material in an update that makes this a crucial book for Beatles fans.

The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider's Diary of The Beatles, Their Million-Dollar 'Apple' Empire and Its Wild Rise and Fall
by
Richard Dilello

When American teenager Richard DiLello wandered into the Beatles' Apple building in 1968, he was immediately appointed "house hippie." He began making tea, rolling joints, and listening to dozens of demo tapes. By the time Apple crumbled a few years later he was director of public relations. Along the way he noted many of the stoned conversations he heard and the insane bits of business he witnessed: one-man bands auditioning in the reception area, Hell's Angels taking over Saville Row, and the Beatles playing on the roof. Full of period detail, with a riotously colorful cast of characters, The Longest Cocktail Party is fast-paced and funny but also manages to be immensely poignant about the demise of the Fab Four and the death of the '60s dream.

A Cellarful of Noise: The Autobiography of the Man Who Made the Beatles
by
Brian Epstein, Martin Lewis

Brian Epstein's magnificence and decency as a person, and secondly as manager of the Fab Four, is what really comes across in this warm, revealing account of the rise of the Beatles. I really think that had Brian lived, the boys would never have split up. Argued yes, but split, no. Not if Brian would have had his way. His integrity (such as not going back on a contract, even though it would have meant the Beatles could have made a ton more money) makes me respect him highly. One such incident was referenced by the Ed Sullivan show, which was contracted at a measly amount, before the mop tops took America by storm and were commanding much larger contract dollars. It's seemingly rare to find this kind of integrity in the entertainment industry, and probably garners the criticism of those who later said Brian was a 'poor' manager, not getting the Beatles their due share.

The Beatles: After the Break-Up 1970-2000: A Day-By-Day Diary
by
Keith Badman
First let me say what a wonderful book this is. I bought it thinking of it as a reference, but ending up reading it cover to cover. There are many stories that run through the book, John, Paul, George, and Ringo's lives, for sure, but you can also follow the legal cases (I never knew Apple records sued Apple Computers, and got an undisclosed settlement!), the tours, the press bickering and the love fests in the press.

John Lennon, Yoko Ono (Introduction)

Fatherhood fit John Lennon far better the next time around when the indulgent daddy, then in his late 30s, put his musical career on hold to indulge his second son, Sean. Evidence of Lennon the doting dad can be found in this 48-page collection of sun-drenched illustrations sketched out to entertain a toddling offspring.

Tough find now. Currently out of print, but available in some used markets.

Skywriting by Word of Mouth : And Other Writings, Including the Ballad of John and Yoko
by
John Lennon and Yoko Ono

This book is clever (which is little wonder because John Lennon can be criticized for many things but never for his lack of wit). If you are a fan of the great Mr. Lennon, This is a must read. I would venture to say that there are more puns in this book than in any other piece of literature. It truly helps one understand the man behind all the hype - in very much the same way as the John Lennon Anthology does (which, by the way, is priceless). It's a thing of beauty, and as funny and entertaining as they come.

The Beatles
by
Na, Mike Venwzia, Mike Venezia

I like this book for young readers whom you might want to introduce to the legendary Beatles. Brief and somewhat superficial, the text includes details about the band members' childhoods and a simplified explanation of the band's impact on rock-and-roll. However, the silly cartoons placed throughout this biography make the Beatles more accessible and appealing to today's young readers. Black-and-white photographs are included.

The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics
by
Alan Aldridge (Editor)

In 320 photos and illustrations, renowned artists offer their interpretations of various songs. "Help" is visualized by Ronald Searle; "Fixing a Hole," by Tomi Ungerer; "Glass Onion," by Peter Max; "I'm So Tired," by David Hockney; and "Oh, Darling," by Ralph Steadman. Aldridge also contributes his own trippy illustrations, which reflect the bold, bulbous, cartoons-on-acid style of 1960s poster art. This rich compilation also has brief quotes from the Beatles explaining the origins of the themes and lyrics of certain songs. For example, despite the buzz that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about LSD, according to Paul, "What happened was that John's son Julian did a drawing at school and brought it home, and he has a schoolmate named Lucy, and John said, 'What's that?' and he said 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds.'" Band members also share their thoughts on superstardom, including this now weighty comment from John: "I don't intend to be a performing flea anymore. I was the dreamweaver, but although I'll be around I don't intend to be running at 20,000 miles an hour trying to prove myself. I don't want to die at 40." It can't bring them back, but The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics can take you on a long and winding road of nostalgia.

Black Market Beatles; The Story Behind the Lost Recordings
by
Jim Berkenstadt

The book recaps the history of bootlegging and incorporates how The Beatles treasures leaked out to bootleggers. The incredible amount of original research sets this book apart from the usual cut-and-paste books about the group. This one breaks new ground, unearthing in the bootlegger's own words how they stole tapes. The book completes the historic picture of unfinished works of this century's most important rock band.

Get Back : The Unauthorized Chronicle of the Beatles' Let It Be Disaster
by Doug Sulpy, Ray Schweighardt

Hailed as one of the most in-depth portraits ever presented of a band, Get Back traces--in an incredible minute-by
-minute re-creation--every move that the Beatles made during the making of their ill-fated Let It Be album and film in January 1969. The friction that formed within the band during these recording sessions is chronicled here in closely observed detail, and the result is an extraordinarily intimate look at the Beatles and their music during their most difficult period.

John, Paul & Me; Before the Beatles, the True Story of the Very Early Days, with CD
by
Len Garry

Fellow (Quarrymen)bandmate Len Gerry does a good job documenting the first gigs, run-ins with Teddy Boy gangs, and the significance of Penny Lane. I could have done with less of Garry's personal biography, but I mourned along with him as he told of the loss of his friend John Lennon.

THE SONGS OF JOHN LENNON
by
John Stevens

An essential guide for all songwriters and Beatles fans, this book explores John Lennon's songwriting genius with a guided tour through 25 of his Beatles-era hits. Author John Stevens explains Lennon's intuitive talent from a technical point of view, through the lens of songwriting's three basic elements: melody, harmony and lyric. He shows how Lennon fashioned songs that were at once politically and socially relevant during the '60s, yet remain ageless and timeless today.

The Beatles After the Break-Up: In Their Own Words
by
David Bennahum

This is a nice book to peruse thru every now and then. It shows how John, Paul, George, and Ringo have evolved since the break up. Yes, each of their opinions change from time to time but don't we all see things differently at specific points in our lives. In spite of some acrimony over the years, I feel that these guys all basically respected and cared for each other very much. A neat novelty.

Nowhere Man: The Final Days of John Lennon
by
Robert Rosen

Robert Rosen's new book "Nowhere Man. The final Days of John Lennon" portrays the former leader of the famous music quartet from a very different, unexplored viewpoint. Rosen focuses on Lennon's inner life, his private self that existed far away from the public eye. He portrays a man that was pushed back and forth between the disciplined life of a yogi and the more ordinary, worldly pleasures of an aging human being and celebrity who had lost touch with the world and himself. Like other depressed people Lennon's daily schedule was dominated by minor tasks and challenges that had become the center of his existence. His universe evolved around juice fasts, dream journals, his appearance and horoscopes. Long gone were the heights of creativity, no reading and no meditation could bring them back and smoking grass didn't help either.

The John Lennon of the late seventies and early eighties observed New York from the windows of the Dakota: down there in Central Park the real life was happening, up in the rooms of the Dakota superstition and paranoia had taken over. We learn a lot from this book about how the Lennons lived, how they hired and fired their service people, how they raised there son, which books John read etc. But mostly we learn from these pages the story of a desperate man who thought he had nowhere to go anymore and who because his life was tragically taken from him never got a second chance to find out differently.

Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now
by
Barry Miles

If you think John Lennon was the smart, arty Beatle while Paul was an empty head twittering prettily, this book will hip you to the facts. While John sat in the suburbs getting stoned to numb the pain of his imminent divorce, bachelor Paul was feeding his head by immersion in the London avant-garde. He pioneered the Beatles' experimental stuff, though his witty song-by
-song account proves that it really was a 50-50 partnership--and some of the best innovations, like the snarling 1964 feedback intro to "I Feel Fine," happened by pure accident. Paul's insight into John's genius, which sprang from howling paranoia and a stark childhood, is still deeper than his insight into himself, but the book's true glory is its inside info on all those songs--the six tunes about John's marriage on A Hard Day's Night; Paul's heist of the "I Saw Her Standing There" bass line from Chuck Berry's "I'm Talking About You" (found on Berry's The Chess Box); the true meanings of "Norwegian Wood" (pine paneling, which the song's narrator burns to avenge the girl's refusal to have sex with him), "Got to Get You into My Life" ("you" is marijuana), and "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" ("life goes on" in Yoruba). This book is even better than A Hard Day's Write: The Stories Behind Every Beatles' Song and Revolution in the Head. Here is the last word on the Beatles, inevitably slanted toward McCartney but generally more convincing than Lennon's own recollections.

Blackbird Singing : Poems and Lyrics, 1965-1999
by
Paul McCartney, Adrian Mitchell (Editor)

It is nearly impossible to scan any of Paul McCartney's lyrics without hearing the Beatles' music in the background, dictating rhythm, pace, and mood. But as Blackbird Singing demonstrates, the effort is worth making. This first collection brings together early and late poems, along with some of Sir Paul's greatest hits (including the words to "Yesterday," "Lady Madonna," "Penny Lane," and "Hey Jude.") In his introduction, editor and fellow Liverpudlian Adrian Mitchell urges readers to "wash out the name and the fame" and examine what's on the page. If you can do this, you're in for a pleasant surprise.

Ringo Starr
by
Alan Clayson

As an inveterate Beatles fan, I was naturally drawn to this book. Clayson does an admirable job of following Ringo from his early days in the rough Dingle section of Liverpool to his years as a Beatle and beyond.

Clayson's use of quoted interviews with people who knew and worked with Ringo is what makes this book so effective. I like the way he portrays Ringo as approachable, as somewhat humble about his stellar success as one quarter of the world's number one band. This is definitely worth reading.

The Beatles' Shadow: Stuart Sutcliffe & His Lonely Hearts Club
by
Pauline Sutcliffe, Douglas Thomas

A poignant memoir of the forgotten Beatle, Stuart Sutcliffe, and a remarkable account of the early days of the world's most influential pop group. Stuart Sutcliffe is the most famous contender for the crown of 'fifth Beatle'. One of the founding members, a close friend of Lennon, he left the band after their Hamburg sojourn in order to pursue his promising career as an artist, dying shortly thereafter of a brain haemorrage. For years his sister Pauline has tried to protect his memory against the Beatles' need to sanitise their early history and now she is ready to tell the real story. In doing so she sheds new light on their formative period - the rivalry with McCartney, how George Harrison tried to keep the peace, the truth about Stuart's intense relationship with Lennon and why Lennon was haunted by guilt over her brother's death. And she describes what it was like for those like herself and Cynthia Lennon who have lived with the Beatles in their lives all their lives, although this was not of their choosing. Drawing on her own memories as well as the many letters in her possession. Pauline Sutcliffe shares her unique insight into the young men who became the Beatles. But above all this book is a loving tribute to Stuart, who died at the age of twenty-one, but whose contribution to the Beatles lives on.

But he was also there when things started to go wrong: when George Harrison quit the band at the height of their success and when it all started to spiral out of control. And he reveals for the first time exactly what caused their break–up. Filled with many never–before–seen photos, this a must for fans. As Brian Epstein’s right–hand man, Alistair Taylor was with the charismatic manager when he first saw The Beatles perform at The Cavern. Taylor later became the band’s ever–present Mr. fix–it. Robert R., Dr Hieronimus, Laura Cortner

This book is the ultimate and exclusive resource for anybody interested in the clash between the gentle citizens of “Pepperland” and the hated “Blue Meanies” who threatened to rob the world of its color and music.

Until now, very little true research has ever been done about this memorable achievement in The Beatles’career. This book reveals countless facts about the movie from the man who has met with nearly everyone associated with the film. It includes photos depicting scenes and characters from the movie, as well as candid shots of many behind-the-scenes people.

Featuring original art from the movie, an introduction by Sir George Martin (The Beatles’ producer) and a foreword by Erich Segal (scriptwriter of the movie), this amazing book is for any fan of The Beatles’ music, movies or animation.

Beatletoons, The Real Story Behind The Cartoon Beatles
by
Mitchell Axelrod

This is a FUN book, plain and simple. It goes without saying that Beatles fans will be delighted, yet animation buffs and media students (even if they are not counted among the former) will not be disappointed. The process by which four real-life people were transformed into animated form is most fascinating. And the author has managed to find and interview many who were arms-deep into the planning and creation of the series. For Mr. Axelrod this must have been an exhausting project but well worth it, for what emerges is obviously a labor of love. The series, which seems to have had a loyal cult following for three decades after its last episode, actually predated "Yellow Submarine" by three years and served as a springboard for the latter, all hailing from an era when animation was done by hand to meet weekly demand. Profusely illustrated, my own favorite images from the book are the prototypal sketches where each of the "real" Beatles habits and idiosyncrasies are outlined as a guide in the evolution of their celluloid counterparts. And the section on the resultant merchandising from the TV series is amusing and must surely feature some new additions to the field. Mr. Axelrod has admirably filled a gap in the seemingly endless trail of Beatle history, striking a balance between the scholarly and fun, emphasis on the latter.

Turn Me On, Dead Man: The Complete Story of the Paul McCartney Death Hoax
by
Andru J. Reeve

In the fall of 1969, a rumor that Paul McCartney had died three years earlier in a car crash swept America. Started by deejays, the hoax gained momentum when a college newspaper article postulated that the other Beatles had replaced him with the winner of a hastily arranged Paul look-alike contest. They also allegedly planted clues to the tragedy in their records; e.g., a passage in their titleless white album supposedly says--when played backwards--"turn me on, dead man." National news reports spread the story further, and McCartney finally consented to give formal press interviews to lay it to rest. It lives on as an entire generation's cultural memory and was spoofed by Paul himself in the title and on the cover of his recent concert album, Paul Is Live. Reeve traces the hoax's origins and spread in maniacal detail, to the point of providing transcripts of radio shows and listing 70 of the Beatles' "clues" that Paul was dead.

Magical Mystery Tours : My Life with the Beatles (Hardcover)
by Tony Bramwell

Bramwell, a longtime Beatles business associate and childhood friend, offers a fond, intimate portrait of the Fab Four. His often gossipy recollections illuminate the players from their days as young "scousers" in working-class Liverpool to their formation as a group, and from their exhausting early stints in Hamburg to their astonishing stardom. Readers will be surprised to learn how much money the Beatles left on the table owing to the bad deals that Brian Epstein, the Beatles' respected but conflicted manager, made. Still, the group remained fiercely loyal to Epstein, who made them—and many others—rich beyond their dreams, cutting deals in what was then uncharted business territory. Throughout, Paul comes off as down to earth, Ringo as sophisticated and "Hollywood," and George, charming and gentle, if a bit unusual. Not surprisingly, it is John who piques the most interest. Bramwell blisters Yoko Ono, "the Princess of Darkness," and suggests that either she brainwashed John or that he was suffering from mental illness. Although music historians and Beatles collectors may feel they know the story, Bramwell's memoir is much more than Beatles history. Energetically written, this is a vivid and intensely personal look at not only the Beatles but at a storybook trip from the docks of Liverpool to swinging London and the very epicenter of the British invasion.

The Beatles As Musicians: The Quarry Men Through Rubber Soul
by
Walter Everett

Here, There and Everywhere : My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles (Hardcover)
by
Geoff Emerick, Howard Massey

Emerick was a fresh-faced young engineer in April 1966 when producer George Martin offered him the chance to work with the Beatles on what would become Revolver. He lasted until 1968, when tensions within the group, along with the band members' eccentricities and the demands of the job, forced him to quit after The White Album, exhausted and burned out. In this entertaining if uneven memoir, Emerick offers some priceless bits of firsthand knowledge. Amid the strict, sterile confines of EMI's Abbey Road studio, where technicians wore lab coats, the Beatles' success allowed them to challenge every rule. From their use of tape loops and their labor-intensive fascination with rolling tape backwards, the Beatles—and Emerick—reveled in shaking things up. Less remarkable are Emerick's personal recollections of the band members. He concedes the group never really fraternized with him—and he seems to have taken it personally. The gregarious McCartney is recalled fondly, while Lennon is "caustic," Ringo "bland" and Harrison "sarcastic" and "furtive." Still, the book packs its share of surprises and will delight Beatle fans curious about how the band's groundbreaking records were made.

Reading the Beatles: Cultural Studies, Literary Criticism, And the Fab Four (Paperback)
by
Todd F. Davis (Editor), Kenneth Womack

While John, Paul, George and Ringo have been (deservedly) deconstructed more than any other rock band, and an academic look at them is welcome, many of the observations made in this collection will leave fans asking, "So what?" In the opening essay, Penn State English professor Ian Marshall carefully explores the band's lyrics. He points out the confessional poetics of Lennon songs like "Nowhere Man," but isn't original when he compares that tune's themes of self-doubt to Thoreau's "mass of men [who] lead lives of quiet desperation." A more intriguing assertion is Marshall's point that The White Album is a work of "post-modernity" that reflects the fracturing of the band's media image as four lovable mop-tops and a "rebuttal" to the earlier Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Far more remarkable is William M. Northcutt's essay, which studies "death, loss, and the crowd" on Sgt. Pepper. Northcutt, who teaches cultural studies at Germany's University of Wuppertal, introduces the idea that the album's cover, with its famous portrait of the Beatles surrounded by cultural icons, reveals the band's distance from the crowd and its conflicted feelings toward fame.

Top SellerJohn (Hardcover)
by
Cynthia Lennon

There's a lot of cruelty (his) and bitterness (hers) in this book by the late Beatle's first wife and mother of his elder son, Julian Lennon. A rehash of the Beatles' beginnings from the wife's point of view, the book reveals that Lennon was a pretty messed-up guy who preached universal love for the world and ignored his own family. Saddest, of course, is the effect of all this on Julian, who writes the introduction and praises Mum for her courage and love. Three marriages later, though, Cynthia still burns with anger—mostly at Yoko Ono, whom she believes brainwashed John. When asked if she was sorry she'd fallen in love with the singer-songwriter in the first place, she writes, "If I'd known as a teenager what falling for John Lennon would lead to, I would have turned round right then and walked away." If only she had let him be.

Simon Wells

Photographs from the archives of Getty Images, London, by a wide variety of photographers, including Robert Whitaker

The Beatles: 365 Days is a dazzling photographic survey-in 425 black-and-white and color images, most of which are rarely or never before seen-that follows the Beatles through the arc of their spectacular career from 1963 to 1970. Every aspect of their evolution from mop-tops to legends is depicted, including their personal lives, performances, press conferences, recording sessions, public appearances, photo sessions, filmmaking, and more. The captions by Simon Wells are rich in detail and provide both band history and cultural context for the photographs, as well as quotes from members of the band and those associated with them that have never been published.

The insatiable hunger for new books about the Beatles has never waned, and this arresting volume-with its wealth of never- and seldom-seen pictures that have long been embargoed at the Getty Images archive-will have a special appeal for all Beatles fans.
